Answer engine optimization (AEO): how to write pages that answer
AEO is the practice of making a page answer a real question clearly enough that a search feature or an AI assistant can extract and quote the answer. Here is how I structure it and what to check.
Seven things to check on a page
- Open with a direct answer of roughly 25 to 95 words under the main heading.
- Use real customer questions as H2 or H3 headings.
- Answer each question in the first sentences, then add detail.
- Use a numbered list for processes and a table for comparisons.
- Add a visible FAQ and mark it up with FAQPage only if the questions and answers are visible on the page.
- Show who wrote the page and when it was last updated, with a visible date.
- Keep sentences short enough to read aloud.

What usually goes wrong
Marking up questions that are not visible
Structured data should describe what readers can see. Hidden Q&A markup can be treated as misleading.
Burying the answer
If the answer starts in paragraph six, a person and a machine both have to dig for it.
Text that exists only after JavaScript runs
Some crawlers do not run JavaScript. Put the real text in the initial HTML.
No date or author
Readers and systems use them to judge how current and trustworthy a page is.
Before you write
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization: structuring content so a search feature or AI assistant can find and quote a direct answer.
Is AEO the same as featured snippets?
They are related. A featured snippet is one place where an extracted answer appears; AEO also covers AI assistants and voice results.
Does AEO guarantee that my page will be quoted?
No. It improves how clearly your page answers a question. Whether any system quotes it is outside your control.
How can I check my own page?
You can run it through the free AI Auditor, which scores GEO and AEO conditions and shows the evidence.
